Device Stickering and Barcode Labeling

Apply barcode labels and asset tags to equipment. This procedure ensures all devices are physically labeled with corresponding SnipeIT asset information for quick identification and scanning.
Prerequisites
- Asset has been created in SnipeIT and assigned an asset tag.
- Barcode labels have been generated and printed from SnipeIT.
- Label stock and application tools are available (see Materials section).
- Equipment is clean and ready for labeling.
Materials
- Barcode label stock (specify size and material; e.g., 1" x 1.5" adhesive labels suitable for equipment)
- Label printer configured to SnipeIT output
- Microfiber cloth or isopropyl alcohol wipes (for surface prep)
- Application tool (card or squeegee for smooth adhesion)
Barcode Label Generation in SnipeIT
- In SnipeIT, locate the asset record.
- Select Print Label or Export Barcode.
- Configure label format. Confirm asset tag and barcode are readable size.
- Print labels. Verify barcode scans before applying to equipment.
Label Application Procedure
- Inspect the equipment surface where the label will be applied. Select a location that is.
- Visible and accessible for scanning.
- Unlikely to be damaged during normal use or storage.
- Not obstructing ports, fans, or ventilation areas.
- Clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol wipes. Allow to dry completely.
- Carefully peel the barcode label from the backing.
- Align the label with the equipment surface and apply firmly.
- Use the application tool to smooth the label and ensure complete adhesion, particularly at corners and edges.
- Verify the barcode is readable by scanning it with a barcode reader or phone camera app.
Asset Tag Information
Label should include or display:
- Asset tag (human-readable ID)
- Barcode (machine-readable QR or linear barcode)
- Company name or logo (optional, for security/identification)
Avoid placing labels:
- Over vents or cooling ports
- On removable battery covers or access panels
- On display screens
- In areas subject to high wear or friction
Documentation
- After successful labeling, return the equipment to storage or prepare for deployment.
- Update SnipeIT to reflect label status (e.g., mark as “labeled” or “ready for deployment”).
- If barcode fails to scan, photograph the issue and flag for troubleshooting before the equipment leaves inventory.
Troubleshooting
Barcode does not scan after application. Verify the label surface is clean and flat. Attempt to rescan at different angles. If persistent, remove the label carefully and reapply or print a replacement label.
Label adhesive fails or peels off. The surface may have been dirty or damp at application. Clean and dry the surface thoroughly, then reapply with firm pressure and allow adhesive to cure for 24 hours before moving the equipment.

- Confirm barcode format. Linear or QR code? Will barcode readers be mobile phones, dedicated scanners, or both?
- Define label dimensions and material. Durable adhesive, weatherproof, thermal-printed or standard inkjet?
- Define asset tag format and numbering scheme. Sequential, prefix-based, or auto-generated by SnipeIT?
- Confirm optimal label placement for each equipment type (laptops vs. desktops vs. monitors vs. peripherals).
- Define quality control process. Who verifies barcode readability before equipment leaves inventory?
